In Robert A. Heinlein’s controversial Hugo Award-winning bestseller, a recruit of the future goes through the toughest boot camp in the Universe—and into battle against mankind’s most alarming enemy...Johnnie Rico never really intended to join up—and definitely not the infantry. But now that he’s in the thick of it, trying to get through combat training harder than anything he could have imagined, he knows everyone in his unit is one bad move away from buying the farm in the interstellar war the Terran Federation is waging against the Arachnids.
Because everyone in the Mobile Infantry fights. And if the training doesn’t kill you, the Bugs are more than ready to finish the job...

Amazing
One of the most insightful books I’ve ever had the joy of reading. I just finished it for the third time and it’s always so thought provoking and inspiring that it takes me time just to contemplate what is said. A perfect combination of action and philosophy. Well worth the short time it takes to read.

I get why it’s a classic, but still...
Kind of a let down. Most of the book is spent world building, but not even actual "world" building, more just establishing the hierarchy and function of its fictional military, there's not much lure beyond that. Majority of the story seems to take place between missions with Rico simply trying to survive his superiors. Any battles or skirmishes start and finish almost instantly. And there doesn't seem to be any real ending, the story just kind of stops while Rico and the Roughnecks just keep doing what they do. It's not bad and I can see why it's a classic, but I personally was just expecting a little more.

Where are the bugs?
The reason I loved the Starship Troopers franchise was because of the Arachnids. The thought of alien bugs had me very fascinated. When I finally saw what they were like, I was very satisfied. The militaristic future that the characters are set in doesn't interest me at all. I'm half way into the book and I still have heard any mention of the Arachnids. The only time I heard the characters mention them is the very first chapter when they're raiding the Skinnies city, almost everything else after that was training showing how everything in their future works. Although I agree with all the rest of you on how the movie should've included the power suits, but all in all I think the movie's better than the book.

Amazing book!
This ranks in the top five books I’ve ever read! It’s funny, exciting, easy to follow (except some of the infantry positioning in codes that I don’t know), and actually brought tears to my eyes a few times. I haven’t read Heinlein's work before, but I’m going to start.

Starship Troopers - A great read yet again
I first read this book as a public library hard cover in 1966. It was as challenging and eye opening then as now . A simple story, really, just coming of age - but in a time when being a citizen means more than winning the lottery of birth. This book is simply written but the hard landscape and meditation on freedom and accountability are finely drawn. Provocative and undoubtedly not politically correct in the view of the purveyors of entitlement. Read it, reflect and be thankful for those who chose to fight for our freedom . A fitting companion bookend read is Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels also about "the last full measure of devotion" from the point of view of Gettysburg July 1864. The Bookster

Still A Good Read
I first read Starship Troopers back in 1993 while I was out on a 45 day field exercise at Ft. Bragg. At the time I wasn't much of a reader but someone told me that Starship Troopers was "required reading" by the cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. To this day I don't know if that statement is true but since then I have read the book five more times and I still find it entertaining. It's few of a society where you earn your benefits instead of just getting them for free as a handout is in total contrast with our present society. We could all stand to learn a little from this book. I highly recommend it! Especially for today's youngsters.

Real Life Science Fiction
Being a real life military veteran you find most fictional stories about military life so unrealistically extreme 24/7 it's hard to enjoy the story that is presented. This is not one of those books! From start to finish this has got to be the best fictional account of the mundane activities punctuated by acute bits of action that most people will experience in a real life military career. All you would have to do to make this a story one you might live is to remove the space travel, and place in all on earth say 20 years in the future. I would go as far as to say that this is the best vision of a future military scenario that I have ever read!

Amazing
This is one of the best books to capture the warrior spirit. As a combat veteran I find that his understanding of war and the workings human mind are astounding. If anybody out there wants to further understand the mind of a vet, read this book.

Truly disappointing
If you like Heinlein, or the Starshp Troopers movie franchise, or space battles, or exciting sci-fi, this book is not for you. It's a first-person narrative of Johnny Rico's experience as a mobile infantryman. The bugs and the battles with them are barely part of the novel. It's really a book about military structure and life. It's also about politics. I was really bummed when it ended. I was still waiting for something exciting to happen. It never did.

Great, but...
Why did it stir controversy?

The best book ever
There are few books I read more than once. I am my sixth time through.

Couldn't ask for a better book.
Without a doubt, this is one of Heinlein's masterpieces. Not only does he get you to think about why a military is necessary, but also why the brave men and women who join do what they do. This book shows just how wonderful of a writer Heinlein is: he gets you to think, learn, and ponder what is being said - all while entertaining you at the same time. Frankly, whether you are looking for a romping good time, or want a book that will make you stop and think for weeks to come, you really couldn't ask for a better book.

Great read
Great read for any future soldiers or OCS candidates

A true classic
This book is a study of the human experience as well as the rise and fall of civilization. Take out the technology and the story fits in any point in human history. Think of the movie as being based on the "world" of starship troopers. Just as there are so many spinoff novels written based on the Star Wars movies.

Long winded diatribe filled waste of $9.99
This book seems to forget the writers creedo of "show, don't tell." Either that or he was trying to make a novel out of a novella.

Starship Troopers
This book is nothing like the movie. This is a quick, fun read.

Starship Troopers
I have read this book many times over the past 40 years -- and I always wonder whether I'll enjoy it as much as I have in the previous times I've picked it up. I find this book just as relevant today -- if not more so -- asit was my first time reading it.

Heinlein's Outstanding Creation
Although many would consider some other work as Heinlein's best novel, it is Starship Troopers that snaps a reader out of reading for the "what", and into reading for the "why". A brisk novel, compatriots with Card's "Ender's Game" and Steakley's "Armor", it explores science fiction in setting and device, but it's philosophical musings stand out clear and concise in a muddled sea of bland and abstract essays on the human condition in recent and elder novels. Must be read by anyone, it asks you to wonder why, and to investigate why as truth is reasoned by the synthesis of truths blended with the impossible.

Surprisingly good book
Really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.

One of the greatest fiction books
Starship troopersis arguably one of the best books ever written not only in scifi, but fiction generally. Thoughts on human organization make an integral part of the plot, while the concept of duty is definitly orth noting in the modern individualistic world.

The movie is a farce!
Not to sound like a librarian, but the book is magnitudes better than the movie. Not only did the movie leave out the suits, but left out the other enemy and (imaginative) weaponry (the grenades dropped me - I had to pause reading for minutes to laugh). After reading the book, I realized the book/movie comparison is similar to comparing Dune (the novel) to the older Dune movie (there is no contest).
Roy Batty
One of the greats.
Don't let the awful movie deter you. They even left out the book's greatest invention: the suits. Filled with classic Heinlein politics and short enough to read in a single sitting, this is a must have. It's All Quiet on the Western Front in space.
